Artists Uniforms?

Recently I watched a documentary in which the artist attended a huge art fair and attempted to promote himself. In the course of the documentary the artist shared frustration that no one would talk to him even though he was dressed as an artist. It made me wonder....what does an artist look like? Am I supposed to be wearing some kind of uniform? Because if I am I didn't get that memo, I guess I'm to being my creative self.
